Fatima Abrantes receives the AGU Ambassador Award 2021

AGU is a non-profit organisation that brings together researchers and communicators in the geosciences and space sciences. The Ambassador Award is presented annually to up to five recipients in recognition of their contributions in one or more of the following areas: social impact, service to the geosciences and space sciences community, scientific leadership and talent or career development.

This award is an important recognition from the whole scientific community in the geosciences and space sciences of the excellence of the work of this researcher in research, education and communication of science.

Fátima Abrantes is a senior researcher at the Marine Geology Division of IPMA. She holds a PhD in Marine Geology and is dedicated to the study of the history of the oceans in the geological past. She has authored 110 scientific papers and co-edited the book “Reconstructing Ocean History: A Window into the Future and The Climate of the Mediterranean Region”.

About the award, Fátima Abrantes says: “It is a distinction that came as a total surprise, I never expected it! It is however very good to get a peer recognition, at international level, for the work done since 1990 in the formation and development of a research group in Palaeoceanography and Palaeoclimate in Portugal, of all the effort to affirm the value of the group and the country at International level, through the education of many young researchers from Portugal and abroad. Despite the difficulties that always had to be faced at national level, this international recognition confirms that fighting for a dream is worth it!”

Fátima Abrantes joins other scientists, leaders, educators, journalists and communicators from all over the world whose extraordinary contribution has allowed to expand the frontiers of science.

AGU will celebrate this year’s winners during the #AGU21 Fall Meeting, to be held 13-17 December 2021 in New Orleans, Los Angeles and, online, around the world.

Fatima Abrantes is interviewed on the podcast “Ciencia com Impacto”

The head of the Lisbon Unit, Fatima Abrantes, is interviewed on the science podcast  “ciência com impacto”

“If we want to predict the future evolution of the Earth’s climate we need to know its past. This is the motto of Fátima Abrantes’ research – a paleoceanographer from IPMA and CCMAR – Centro de Ciências do Mar. And to achieve this goal, the sediments of the ocean floor, shell fossils of bivalves and the eternal ice of the Arctic and Antarctic are studied.”

Fatima Abrantes interview with Nicolau Ferreira for the Science Section of the newspaper Publico

Paleoceanographic studies have been trying to reveal the climatic history of the North Atlantic of the last hundreds of thousands of years. The complex puzzle is a crucial key for scientists trying to anticipate the consequences of global warming. Here, Fatima Abrantes, head of the Lisbon Unit, was interviewed by the newspaper Publico, regarding her thoughts on paleoceanography and how it’s helping us understand today’s anthropocene.

Chromium isotopes extracted from coral samples using the Clean Lab equipment – a new exploratory project led by Lelia Matos

Lelia Matos presented her newly funded project “CoralOx”, within the MIT-Portugal Program. This exploratory project will investigate the applicability of cold-water coral chromium-isotopes as a proxy for suboxic ocean conditions. The project will run from July 2021-June2022, in a joint collaboration between IPMA, CCMAR and the EAPS, at MIT. Part of the laboratorial work will be developed at the EMSO-PT Clean Lab, at IPMA, Algés.

The Biogeochemistry lab in Action

Master student, Ricardo Santos, put together this video to show the preparation and work that goes into each biomarker sample.

Ricardo’s dissertation is entitled “Hydroclimate reconstruction of Western Iberia over the last 3600 years – insights from lipid biomarker and specific isotope signal”, and all data was generated in the Biogeochemistry Lab at the Lisbon Unit. The work forms part of the project Holmodrive (PTDC/CTA-GEO/29029/2017) (http://holmodrive.rd.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/).
