What is EMSO GOLD?

Visit EMSO-PT

GOLD (Geological Oceanography Laboratory Develop-ment) is the land-based laboratory network that support EMSO-PT by performing biogeochemical analysis on water column  samples. GOLD is part of the national research infrastructures network and will also support scientific objectives related to Paloesciences, Biodiversity, Sediment Dynamics and Natural Resources.

This laboratory is open to  national and international communities.

1. To actively contribute towards fulfilling the national obligations of EMSO-ERIC, EU Marine Directives and European initiatives like the Digital Ocean

2. To archive and preserve water, sediment and rock samples to assure their long-term access to any researcher

3. To provide national and international scientists/students/trainees with the skills to maintain, develop and sustain future EMSO activities in Portugal or their home country

4. To monitor environmental variables and processes, deepening our knowledge and understanding of marine environmental conditions and dynamics

To contribute to the physical, biological and chemical characterization of water masses at the EMSO-PT sites, provide information on oceanic processes and their effect(s) on marine biota productivity and diversity, as well as the isotopic and trace-element composition of microfossil shells and cold water corals

9. To improve our understanding of oceanographic, climatic and environmental conditions in the recent past in order to provide (pre-industrial) baselines for the continuous monitoring data series generated by the EMSO-PT Cadiz observatory

To contribute to placing magnitude and rapidity of present day climate change into the perspective of past extreme climate episodes, events and catastrophes, as well as, of past causes and effects to improve the capacity to better recognize signals of importance (e.g., approaching tipping points) in the data to be acquired.

16. To provide new insights for modeling and more accurately forecasting future changes in ocean circulation and climate, and consequently, to equip policy makers to account for climate change effects and global warming in future decisions.
